Dewey Decimal Classification Based Concept Visualization for Information Retrieval
نویسندگان
چکیده
Visual knowledge maps utilizing concepts have great potential to support interactive information retrieval. Unlike keyword-based visual information retrieval, concept-based knowledge maps can make the visualization easier to comprehend and manipulate. In this paper, we introduce our novel visual search interface based on Dewey Decimal Classification concept annotations. The web browser based interface visualizes search results initialized from user queries. Main functions of the interface include interactive manipulation, exploration, and filtering of concepts and links in different levels from overview to details. The visualization connects related concepts not apparent in conventional treelike hierarchical representations and it can promote discovery of novel concepts during the visual exploration of search space. A real use-case scenario is presented to highlight the advantages of the approach.

Automatic Analysis of Dewey Decimal Classification Notations
The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) was conceived by Melvil Dewey in 1873 and published in 1876. Nowadays, DDC serves as a library classification system in about 138 countries worldwide. Recently, the German translation of the DDC was launched, and since then the interest in DDC has rapidly increased in German-speaking countries. The complex DDC system (Ed. 22) allows to synthesize (to build...
متن کاملEmpirical Classification for Musical Information Retrieval
In the continuing goal of codifying the classification of musical sounds and rules for data mining we present the following classification methodology that produces a hierarchical granulation structure. The motivation for this paper is based upon the fallibility of Hornbostel/Sachs, the generic classification scheme used in Music Information Retrieval for instruments. In eliminating the redunda...
متن کاملManaging Hierarchies and Taxonomies in Relational Databases
The need to maintain classification and retrieval mechanisms that rely on concept hierarchies is as old as language itself. Familiar examples include the Dewey decimal classification system used in libraries and the system for classifying life forms developed in the 1700s by Carolus Linnaeus. A more recent example is Yahoo’s subject taxonomy. Information technology has led to an explosive growt...
متن کاملCollaborative thesaurus tagging the Wikipedia way
This paper explores the system of categories that is used to classi fy articles in Wikipedia. It is compared to collaborative tagging systems like del.icio.us and to hierarchical classification like the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). Specifics and common alities of these systems of subject indexing are exposed. Analysis of structural and statistical properties (descriptors per record, re...
متن کاملInformation Retrieval Techniques
There is currently huge amount of data on the Web and almost no classification information. The key problem is how to embed knowledge into information mining algorithms. The authors analyse techniques of information retrieval and give their strong and weak points. Although most Web documents are text oriented, there are plenty of them that contain multimedia elements, which are not easily acces...
